If I Dropped By... with Jamie DiTringo and John BellaVia of The Golden Furs

This week, I posed my "If I Dropped By..." question to Jamie DiTringo and John BellaVia of New York based band The Golden Furs.  This is what I found out during my hypothetical visits to their homes.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): ... and brought a friend who didn't know your music, what song of yours would you play for them and why?

John BellaVia (JBV): O Father! Acapella. You would play bongos and your friend can do hand claps. As long as there is someone else with a deep Barry White-ish voice for the bass, we are set.  O Father! just brings people together.

Jamie DiTringo (JDT): Amethyst. It’s one of the 1st songs John, Saul and I wrote together when we started the band and has a special place in my heart. Awww.. It has a lot of elements we really enjoy from the experimental intro, to the snappy verses and heaviness that drives the song. It’s tough to pick one because O Father is fan favorite at the moment.

(QNYC): ... what song or album would you feel I needed to hear before I left?

(JBV): You Done My Brain In by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. Its just great exit music.

(JDT): I mean you cannot drop by my place and not listen to Led Zeppelin “Physical Graffiti”. We will sit and count all the Robert Plant “Oooh ooh, yeaheeeyeah’s” over Disc 1 and Disc 2. It’s happening.

(QNYC): ... would you proudly display the cheesy music in your collection or pretend someone left it by mistake?

(JBV): Proudly display it!  The only thing cheesy is trying to hide who you really are. So what if every Menudo album ever made just happens to be closest to the record player...

(JDT): Embrace the cheese. Always embrace the cheese. But one needs to clearly define the cheese. To me the aged cheddar of cheesiness is Night Ranger “Sister Christian”. We can have a Boogie Nights moment and throw fire crackers during a highly illegal narcotics deal. This would be followed by delicious Gouda aka the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

(QNYC): … Kung Fu Fighting, Disco Duck or Macho Man

(JBV): DISCO DUCK. PURE GENIUS.

(JDT): Kung Fu Fighting so I can embrace my inner Bruce Lee. But I prefer Leroy Green as Taimak in Berry Gordy’s “The Last Dragon”. A perfect combination of Motown and kung fu fighting!

(QNYC): … sushi or Mexican?

(JBV): We're doing Sushi and Tequila.

(JDT): Spicy Tuna with Guacamole infused with tequila. SUSHI-CAN!

(QNYC): ... what's one thing you must have in your refrigerator at all times?

(JBV): Cucumbers. And that's that.

(JDT): Sabra Hummus. I like to change up the flavors.

(QNYC): Thank you for having me over.  Au revior!
